Blood collection

For those utilizing private blood collection services

Only the tests listed in the Test Menu (list of lab tests) are permitted to be collected by external private specimen collection agencies for Eastern Zone laboratory testing.

Tests outside of this list must be collected at an Eastern Zone outpatient blood collection site or directly collected by a physician or nurse practitioner.

Blood collection appointments at NL Health Services

Blood collection is by appointment only, Monday to Friday, excluding statutory holidays:

  • In St. John’s metro area– Appointments for blood collection can be booked by phone from 7:00 a.m. to 2:45 p.m., Monday to Friday, at all sites in the St. John’s Metro area. Phone numbers are listed below.
  • Outside of the city – Patients requiring blood collection can call the blood collection centre of their choice to book an appointment, from Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Phone numbers are listed below.

Book online: Blood collection in St. John’s

Patients can book their blood collection appointments online for the Major’s Path Community Health Clinic, St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital and the Waterford Hospital.

Patients and clients will be able to view, select and book an available time for their appointment online. Family members of patients and clients may also book appointments online if patients and clients are unable to do so. For those who are unable to book online, they may still make an appointment by calling 709-777-6933.

Major’s Path Clinic is the main adult blood collection site for St. John’s and also replaces the General Hospital (Health Sciences Centre) Blood Collection clinic. Do not go to the General Hospital for routine blood collection unless you have been an appointment.

Specimen drop-off window hours:

All specimens for blood and urine must be delivered to the laboratory within 3 hours of sample collection, or less if necessary to ensure sample stability is maintained.
