Ongoing events and initiatives

Are you interested in training to become a phlebotomist with Eastern Health?

Phlebotomists are an integral part of our health-care team and are responsible for the collection of specimens for laboratory analysis.

Phlebotomists are responsible for collecting blood from patients through venipuncture, instructing patients on proper collection techniques of urine and other specialized samples, properly labelling specimens, and other general duties as required. 

Eastern Health currently has funding available to support nominees in completing the Phlebotomy Program at the College of the North Atlantic, St. John’s campus, which begins on April 10, 2023.

Program schedule

Week 1
(April 10 to April 16)
• Online classes Monday, Wednesday and Thursday (7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.)
• In-person Lab Sunday at Prince Philip Drive Campus, St. John’s (12:00 p.m. – 6 :00 p.m.)
Week 2
(April 17 to April 23)
• Online classes Monday, Wednesday and Thursday (7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.)
• In-person Lab Sunday at Prince Philip Drive Campus, St. John’s(12:00 p.m. – 6 :00 p.m.)
Week 3
(April 24 to April 30)

Prerequisite requirements

Eastern Health is currently seeking motivated individuals who have a background in health care, or who are interested in working in the health-care field. To be considered for this opportunity, candidates must apply and meet the following admission requirements for the phlebotomy program on their own merit:

Eastern Health is currently seeking motivated individuals who have a background in health care, or who are interested in working in the health-care field. To be considered for this opportunity, candidates must apply and meet the following admission requirements for the phlebotomy program on their own merit:

  • Completion of high school or equivalent.
  • A satisfactory Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Check.
  • Completion of a pre-placement immunization and communicable disease screening.
  • International applicants – English proficiency.
    • The College will accept recognized tests of English language proficiency: TOEFL paper-based 550, TOEFL Internet-based 79, TOEFL computer-based 213 or equivalent, IELTS Academic Test overall band score of 6.0, or Pearson PTE 53 or greater.
  • Candidates must meet the minimum technology/computer requirements (requirements found here ).
  • Candidates must be willing and available to begin the education program on April 10, 2023.

Financial assistance

Financial assistance will be provided to cover the cost of tuition for the Phlebotomy Program. A return-in-service agreement will be required, and the length will depend on the total amount of funding provided. Applicants who successfully complete the program may be offered employment, at which time the service obligation would begin.
