History
Saint Luke’s, a component of Anglican Homes Incorporated, was opened and dedicated on June 17, 1965 by the Rt. Rev. John A. Meaden.
The complex was comprised of seven buildings. The main building provided 57 beds for ambulatory residents needed special are. Six buildings containing 48 one-bedroom cottages provided accommodation for 96 guests and this arrangement was the beginning of a new concept in Family Housing, the first senior citizen cottages in the Province.
In 1976, a new 45-bed extension to the main building and six two-bedroom cottages for Anglican clergy were opened.
In September 1979, Saint Luke’s became the first Home in St. John’s to receive accreditation status.
In 1981, Phase 1 of the Bishop John Meaden Manor complex was officially opened providing a maximum accommodation for 72 persons in 40 two-bedroom apartments and 12 one-bedroom apartments. Then in 1987, 18 one-bedroom apartments and six two-bedroom apartments.
An Outreach Program, which provides Adult Day Care to people living in their own homes or with relatives was put in place in 1981, the first in St. John’s. We will remain the only Nursing Home in St. John’s with an active Adult Day Care Program.
In December 1985, the official opening of the new Chapel and the Southview Lounge was held. This gave the residents a larger Chapel for worship and a room in which to hold recreation activities.
