Frequently Asked Questions

How do I pay my bill?

There are a few ways to pay your hospital or ambulance bill as listed here.

What should I do if I cannot afford to pay my bill in full?

Please call 709-752-4761 to discuss a payment arrangement.

An ambulance was called, but I wasn’t transported to hospital – do I still have to pay?

You will be billed whether you are transported by the ambulance or not.

I received a bill for a private/semi-private room but I didn’t request one…what should I do?

If you didn’t sign for a private/semi-private room but were billed for one, please call 709-777-1480, option 5, or e-mail accounts.receivable@easternhealth.ca; Once verified by finance staff, the bill will be cancelled.

Why did I receive 2 bills for the same ambulance service?

Patients not covered by the Newfoundland and Labrador Medical Care Plan (MCP) may receive a bill for $125.00 plus $1.84/kilometer (round trip). This is in addition to the standard operator’s fee of $115.00.

What services/procedures are not covered by MCP

The Medical Care Insurance Insured Services Regulations list specific services which are not insured under the Medical Care Plan. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Drugs dispensed on an outpatient basis;
  • Provision of medical appliances;
  • Preparation of records, reports or certificates;
  • Services available under other provincial or federal legislation (e.g. workers’ compensation, Canadian Forces, Veterans Affairs, etc.);
  • Ambulance services or other transportation;
  • Non-medically necessary examinations or examinations required by third parties (e.g. annual check-up, employment, immigration, pre-school or drivers’ medicals, etc.);
  • Surgery for cosmetic purposes;
  • Routine, in-hospital, dental extractions; and
  • Reversal of a previous sterilization procedure.

I am a Canadian resident and have health coverage in another province or territory, e.g. OHIP. Why did I receive a bill?

If you present at an Eastern Health facility without your health-care card, you will be billed.  To have the bill re-directed to your home province or territory, please call 709-777-1480 option 6 or e-mail   accounts.receivable@easternhealth.ca with your card number and expiry date (if applicable).  If your card does have an expiry date, it must not be expired; otherwise, you will be responsible for the charges.

I’m a non-resident of Canada. Can you bill my insurance company directly?

Some insurance companies outside Canada will not accept direct billing from Eastern Health.  In that case, the process is to pay Eastern Health first and then seek reimbursement from your insurance company.

If direct billing is accepted we will work with your insurance company to facilitate the billing and payment process; however, you, as the patient, are ultimately responsible for the bill.  Please call 709-777-1480 Option 7 or e-mail accounts.receivable@easternhealth.ca.

We do not direct bill for charges totaling less than $1,000 CAD.
