Policies

The following policies apply to all Eastern Health sites:

Consent

Consent is required on admission for all treatment, blood transfusions and other special procedures, as required.

Latex

  • Latex is found in rubber products and can cause severe allergic reactions in some people.
  • Rubber balloons are not permitted in any of our hospitals.  Only mylar (metallic) balloons are permitted.
  • If you have a latex allergy, it is important that you inform us in advance of your stay.  Special arrangements will have to be made for your surgical procedure and hospital care.

Scent safety

Do not use or bring in scented products while visiting our health-care sites. Please refrain from using or wearing scented products when our staff visit your home.

Scented and perfumed products contain chemicals which can cause serious problems for many people, especially those with asthma, allergies and sensitivities and include:

  • Perfume/cologne;
  • Deodorant/aftershave;
  • Hair spray/body spray;
  • Scented creams and lotions; and/or
  • Candles/air fresheners.

This policy applies to all Eastern Health employees, physicians, volunteers, students, and agents. It also applies to outside contractors, service providers, patients, clients, residents, and the general public as enforced by those mentioned above.

Smoke-free

We are proud to say that our Eastern Health facilities and grounds are smoke-free.

Over the past 25 years, the efforts of many people and organizations have resulted in a reduction in tobacco use in Canada, including in Newfoundland and Labrador. Despite significant progress smoking remains the leading cause of preventable illness, disability and premature death in Canada. Reducing the tremendous toll caused by tobacco use is a shared responsibility. As a leader in the health sector, Eastern Health is committed to building a healthy workplace for its employees and promoting and supporting health among the people and communities of the eastern region.

Eastern Health would like to remind you that smoking, including the use of all tobacco, cannabis (marijuana) and vapour products (electronic cigarettes also known as e-cigarettes), is not permitted in our facilities or on our grounds. Thank you for not smoking.

For more information, we encourage you to check out our Smoke-Free Environment Policy.

Healthy Food Policy for Retail

Eastern Health’s Healthy Food Policy for Retail, launched in June 2022, focuses on offering food and beverages consistent with Canada’s Food Guide and applies to all cafeterias, canteens, vending machines and gift shops/auxiliaries in Eastern Health facilities. The policy will continue to be implemented across the region in a phased approach.

The policy applies to food and beverages available to the public and staff in Eastern Health facilities. It does not apply to food and beverages provided to patients in hospitals and residents in long-term care facilities, as there are existing nutrition policies and processes in place for this purpose.

For more information, we encourage you to check out our Healthy Food Policy for Retail.
