Before your exam

Three days before your scan 

Do not exercise excessively. You can do light exercise like walking.
 
Six hours before your scan
 
Do not eat any food or candy, or chew gum. You can drink up to one glass (250 ml) of water only. Do not take medicine that contains any sugar or that you need to take with food. You may take medications that can be tolerated on an empty stomach and taken with water only. If possible, a low carbohydrate, high protein diet is suggested for 24-hours prior to the exam.
 
If you are diabetic, please refer to the diabetic instructions below. This is very important as glucose and insulin levels can adversely affect the scan, and if you are not prepared properly, you scan may be cancelled.

What to bring

Please bring the following items to the appointment with you:
  • a completed requisition form, unless your doctor's office previously faxed a copy to Eastern Health;
  • a government-issued health card (MCP card);
  • previous results and images on a CD from any imaging tests (X-ray, bone scan, MRI or CT scan) from the last three months if taken at a hospital outside of the eastern region of Newfoundland and Labrador (i.e. non-Eastern Health facility); and
  • a list of your current medications, vitamins or herbal supplements.
Leave metal objects such as jewelry, eyeglasses, dentures and hairpins at home. Patients are encouraged to wear loose, comfortable clothing.
