Assessment and Treatment

Assessment entails an interview with the client and caregivers regarding concerns and relevant history, and assessment of skills using formal tests and/or observations of the client. Several sessions may be required to complete the assessment. Treatment goals and a therapy plan will then be determined with the client and caregivers.

Treatment may include individual or group therapy sessions, caregiver education sessions, and consultation visits with other service providers such as daycare staff, home therapists and nursing home staff. Counselling is also an important part of treatment, especially with regards to helping clients cope with the impact that communication and swallowing problems can have on daily-living, and school or job functioning.
