What We Do

Speech-language pathologists within Eastern Health offer assessment and treatment services for:

  • Speech Disorders, including difficulties with articulation (sound production in words and sentences), stuttering (disruption in the flow of speech), and voice (hoarseness or inappropriate pitch, loudness or nasality)
  • Language Disorders, including difficulty with comprehension of spoken language, use of words/sentences, vocabulary and grammar skills, use of appropriate language for particular  social situations, reading, writing and nonverbal communication skills (such as pointing, gestures, and eye contact)
  • Feeding and Swallowing Disorders, including problems with chewing and safely swallowing solids or liquids

*In children, delays in typical development of the above skills may exist alone or may be part of a global developmental disorder (i.e., autism, down’s syndrome,) or neuromotor disorders (i.e., cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy). In adults, the client may acquire a speech-language disorder after a neurological event (i.e., stroke, head injury) or secondary to other disease (i.e., multiple sclerosis, parkinson’s disease, head and neck cancer).
