Risk Factors

A colon cancer or rectal cancer risk factor is any condition that makes a person more likely to develop these cancers (when combined they are referred to as colorectal cancers). Some of the risk factors like dietary factors can be modified while some other risk factors like age are not modifiable. Some of the risk factors are:
  • Age, particularly after the age of 50
  • Family history of colorectal cancer or polyps
  • Diet high in red meat and low in fiber
  • Lack of exercise
  • Obesity
  • Smoking and/or excessive alcohol use
  • Personal history of Crohn’s Disease or ulcerative colitis
