Prenatal Classes

Patient information

The main goal of prenatal classes is to promote a healthy pregnancy, labour and delivery; as well as and a healthy baby by providing information and support to pregnant mothers and their support person.

Classes are held at the Women’s Health Center, Room 2J549B, Health Sciences Centre. It is important to register early as classes fill up quickly.  It is not always possible to place you into the class you request.
 
There are seven different types of classes offered. Please see the descriptions below to select a class that better fits your needs.  
  • Registered nurses teach all classes
  • The nutrition class in early pregnancy is taught by a dietician
  • The exercise class by a physiotherapist
  • The drop-in breastfeeding class by a lactation consultant

Online Prenatal Education Sessions

Eastern Health is offering online prenatal education sessions, called The Gift of Motherhood, to women and families across the region. Expectant parents can call 1-844-218-7291 to receive an access code which they can use to access the e-learning module.

1. Three-week early pregnancy classes

These classes are designed for women less than 20 weeks pregnant and are usually offered the first three Wednesdays' of each month. The emphasis is on:

  • Nutrition
  • Exercise
  • Physical and emotional changes of pregnancy
  • Development of the baby
  • Benefits of breastfeeding

2. Five-week labour and birth classes
 
These classes are designed for women having their first baby and are offered one evening a week in the last three months of pregnancy. The emphasis is on:
  • Labour and birth
  • Relaxation and breathing
  • Comfort measures and labour support
  • Hospital tour
  • Benefits of breastfeeding
  • Postpartum

3. Prenatal-in-a-day
 
This full day class is usually attended in the last month of pregnancy.  It is a shortened version of the five-week labour and birth classes. This class is usually held twice a month from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.  The topics highlighted are:
  • Labour and delivery
  • Relaxation and breathing
  • Comfort measures and labour support
  • Hospital tour
  • Benefits of breastfeeding

4. Three-week Refresher Classes
 
These classes are designed for women who have previously attended classes and/or have experienced childbirth.  They are offered one evening a week in the last three months of pregnancy.  The emphasis is on:
  • Labour and birth
  • Recent changes in obstetrics
  • Comfort measures and labour support
  • Hospital tour (siblings may be included)
  • Benefits of breastfeeding

5. Teen Mom Classes
 
These classes are designed for pregnant teenagers and their support person. They can be attended on an individual basis or in small group sessions.
 
Drop-in classes
 
6. Prenatal Breastfeeding Class

This is a drop-in class and is usually offered once a month on a Wednesday evening. Registration is not required.

7. Prenatal Newborn Care Class
 
This is a drop-in class and is usually offered every four to six weeks on a Monday evening. Registration is not required.
