Prenatal Classes

Eastern Health Prenatal Education is now being offered thru ZOOM. 
 
 
An Email with your appointment date and time, and a link will be sent to you. 

The main goal of prenatal classes is to promote a healthy pregnancy, labour and delivery; as well as and a  healthy baby by providing information and support to pregnant mothers and their support person.


 St. John's and Metro Area
 
Classes are held at the Women’s Health Center, Room 2J549B, Health Sciences Centre
 
Please see the descriptions below to select a class that fits your needs. 
  • Labour and Birth/Prenatal Day Classes are taught by experienced labour and birth registered nurses
  • Nutrition Class in early pregnancy is taught by a dietitian
  • Physio Class is taught by a physiotherapist
  • Breastfeeding Class is taught by a lactation consultant 
  • Newborn Care Classes are taught by registered nurses

Types of Classes (see registration information below all classes)

1. Three-week early pregnancy classes

These classes are designed for women less than 20 weeks pregnant and are usually offered the first three Wednesdays of each month. The emphasis is on:

  • Nutrition
  • Exercise
  • Physical and emotional changes of pregnancy
  • Development of the baby
  • Benefits of breastfeeding
 
2. Five-week labour and birth classes
 
These classes are designed for women having their first baby and are offered one evening a week in the last three months of pregnancy. The emphasis is on:
  • Labour and birth
  • Relaxation and breathing
  • Comfort measures and labour support
  • Hospital tour
  • Benefits of breastfeeding
  • Postpartum

3. Prenatal-in-a-day 
 
This full day class is usually attended in the last month of pregnancy.  It is a shortened version of the five-week labour and birth classes. This class is usually held twice a month from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.  The topics highlighted are:
  • Labour and delivery
  • Relaxation and breathing
  • Comfort measures and labour support
  • Hospital tour
  • Benefits of breastfeeding
 
4. Three-week refresher classes
 
These classes are designed for women who have previously attended classes and/or have experienced childbirth.  They are offered one evening a week in the last three months of pregnancy.  The emphasis is on:
  • Labour and birth
  • Recent changes in obstetrics
  • Comfort measures and labour support
  • Hospital tour (siblings may be included)
  • Benefits of breastfeeding

5. Teen mom classes
 
These classes are designed for pregnant teenagers and their support person. They can be attended on an individual basis or in small group sessions.

Class dates are shared on Eastern Health's Facebook and Twitter pages and posted at the Women's Health Clinic.
 

6. Prenatal breastfeeding class

This class is offered twice a month on Monday/Wednesday evenings. Registration is preferred.

7. Prenatal newborn care class
 
This class is offered one to three times a month on Monday/Tuesday/Thursday evenings. Registration is preferred.

Rural Avalon and Peninsulas 
 
Prenatal classes are offered by community health nurses in the Rural Avalon and the Peninsulas’ areas of Eastern Health. It is important to register early as space may be limited. Please call your local community health nurse to inquire and to register for classes in your area.

This education is available on any device with an internet connection and is also available as a mobile app called myYoMingo. 
 
To register for the Online Prenatal Education, send an email to onlineprenatal@easternhealth.ca requesting access to YoMingo. You will receive an email from noreply@myyomingo.com inviting you to create a unique password and log in to your account.
