Meet Kay Williams:
If you choose your career path by what you are passionate about, you cannot go wrong.
Kay Williams, Registered Nurse at the Hoyles Escasoni Complex, chose healthcare because she has always had a passion for helping people who are in need.
“I have always had a passion for helping the sick or the disabled; people in need. The people who don’t have the regular advantages of life,” she said.
Kay has been working in the healthcare field for over 39 years. She started her career working at St. Clare’s, moving after seven years to Exxon House, where she cared for children with level four intellectual disabilities for another seven years. Kay has now been working at the Hoyles Escasoni Complex for 25 years.
“I can’t imagine doing anything else. Every time I go into work I feel like I am making a difference,” Kay said. “I can improve the residents’ care just by being there. Any RN can do it.”
Not only focused on improving the lives of the residents, Kay thinks that keeping the families of the residents involved is very important.
“I think it is important to not only have respect and a positive attitude with the resident but with their families as well,” she said. “Because some residents are cognitively impaired and need their families to make decisions for them.”
Kay said that even if what you can do for the resident is limited, as long as you are doing the best possible care that you are capable of, that is a good thing. Teaching the value of providing a good standard of care is very important when the demographics show that more and more people are retiring and a new generation of people are coming to work.
“You put your values together with the standard of care and you pass that along to others,” she said. “But, it isn’t just about passing it along, you have to make sure they took that information and are making a difference with the residents.”
Kay brings passion and determination in her efforts to make a difference in the lives of every person she cares for. Kay Williams is Living the Values at Eastern Health.
