Promotion and Prevention
At Eastern Health, we are committed to providing quality health care services to the people of our region. When people think of health care services, they often think first of the services that are available in hospitals and clinics. But at Eastern Health we know that it is equally important to keep people healthy and well – long before they need treatment for illness.
Focusing on the health of our population means focusing on preventing illness and promoting wellness.
Newfoundland and Labrador has the highest incidence of colorectal cancer in the country, and is in the top tier of national lists for diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity and alcoholism.
Over the next three years, Eastern Health will focus greater attention than ever on improving the health of our population, by examining the risk factors and root causes of the chronic diseases that are most impacting our population, and by enhanced screening programs.
This includes a new screening program for colorectal cancer, which program targets men and women aged 50-74 who are at average risk, which means that the person feels fine and does not experience any of the symptoms that are associated with colon cancer. The earlier we are able to detect health concerns, the better the outcomes.
The Provincial Government has committed $4.3 million over three years to set up the screening program, which Eastern Health will manage.
