In August 2017, Eastern Health partnered with town councils and community agencies on the Burin Peninsula to form a Coalition for Mental Health & Wellness. The new coalition will foster a healthy community for all citizens - encompassing positive mental health and wellness with a specific focus on suicide awareness, suicide prevention, suicide intervention and post-suicide support.
The Coalition’s objectives include:
- promoting mental health and addictions awareness with the goal of reducing stigma and improving quality of life;
- improving access to services through promotion of local services and identification of resource needs; and
- developing a community action plan for addressing suicide through prevention, intervention and post-suicide strategies.
The Burin Peninsula Community Coalition for Mental Health & Wellness will be aligned with a Community Advisory Council, currently in development, which will guide the recently-established Burin Peninsula Primary Health-Care Initiative.
