Joyful Listening
Joyful Listening is a therapeutic program that brings music, audio books and podcasts to residents living in nursing homes.
Joyful Listening is an expansion of the Music & Memory program. Music and Memory is based on the fact that human brains are hard-wired to connect music with long-term memory. For persons suffering from Alzheimer’s, dementia or other cognitive challenges, music can trigger well-preserved memories enabling the listener to focus on the present moment and to regain a connection to others.

In 2014, the Music & Memory program was successfully piloted at three Eastern Health sites:
  • Saint Luke’s Homes, St. John’s;
  • St. Patrick’s Mercy Home, St. John’s; and
  • Harbour Lodge Nursing Home, in Carbonear.
Since then, this program evolved into Joyful Listening, and it is now offered at 11 long-term sites across the region.
