Inpatient Services

Patients who need to be admitted to the Janeway Children’s Health and Rehabilitation Centre for treatment are cared for in one of the medicine inpatient units:
Inpatient ServicesAll of our inpatient units promote an environment of patient- and family-centerd care, which encourages parents and families to participate in the child’s care as much as possible.

Eastern Health encourages families to, if possible, be prepared for their child’s stay in the hospital. Be sure to ask your health-care provider questions and/or visit the Janeway Resource Centre.

Please become familiar with Eastern Health's visitation policy before visiting an inpatient unit. The public is asked not to visit any of the inpatient units if they feel ill or are experiencing flu-like or gastrointestinal symptoms.

J4 Medicine/Surgery Unit

The J4 Medicine/Surgery Unit provides inpatient care for children and youth with a wide variety of conditions, including but not limited to cardiology, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, gastroenterology, neurology, oncology and respiratory conditions

Some features of the unit include:
  • Playroom: Play is an important part of a child’s life and can make a hospital stay easier. J4 Medicine and Child Life Specialists are available to provide therapeutic play and other special activities for children in the unit. They will also come to the bedside of children and youth who can’t leave their room.
  • Family room: A family room is available in the unit for families to have quiet time away from their child’s room, while remaining nearby.
  • Janeway school:  Your child does not have to miss school while in the hospital. The Janeway School is staffed with teachers and provides classroom and bedside teaching from September to June for children who will be in the hospital for more than seven days.

The NICU is a special nursery for newborns and babies up to three months of age who are born too early, who are sick, or who may need surgery. The unit is located at the Janeway Children’s Health and Rehabilitation Centre.

Eastern Health understands that having your baby in the NICU can be a frightening and overwhelming experience. The NICU staff provide the best possible care and support for your baby and your family.

If your baby is born outside of St. John’s and requires care in the NICU, the Neonatal Transport Team will transport your baby to the unit. This team is a highly specialized group of registered nurses and respiratory therapists who provide stabilization and safe transfer of critically ill infants.
