Development and Rehabilitation Division

Development and Rehabilitation DivisionThe Development and Rehabilitation Division provides service to children and adolescents with physical, developmental and learning disabilities. 
 
The service, which is located at the Janeway Children’s Health and Rehabilitation Centre in St. John’s, offers day patient clinics, outpatient clinics and other specialized clinics. Services also reach into the community with home and child care centre visits and school therapy services for children with physical disabilities.
 
There are five teams within the Development and Rehabilitation Division: 
 
 
Child Development Team
 
The Child Development Team follows children with developmental challenges including, but not limited to:
  • developmental delay;
  • autism spectrum disorder;
  • attention deficit disorder (ADD)/Attention deficit hyperactivity; disorder (ADHD);
  • behaviour challenges; and
  • communication disorders.
This multidisciplinary team consists of developmental pediatricians, nurses, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, psychologists, social workers and speech language pathologists.
 
Referrals to this service are accepted from parents, school personnel, family doctors, community health nurses, child management specialists, behaviour management specialists and developmental behaviour practitioners.

Cleft Lip, Palate and Craniofacial Team 
 
The Cleft Lip, Palate and Craniofacial team follows children who have a cleft lip and/or palate, a facial birth defect or a facial difference caused by an accident or disease. 
 
The team is multidisciplinary and consists of a nurse coordinator, pediatrician, dental hygienist, speech language pathologist, dietitian, occupational therapist, psychologist and social worker.

Learning and Behaviour Team 
 
The Learning and Behaviour team cares for children who have learning and/or behaviour challenges, including but not limited to attention deficit disorder (ADD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and other learning disabilities.
 
This multidisciplinary team consists of a developmental pediatrician, occupational therapist, physiotherapist, psychologist, social worker and nurses. 
 
Referrals are mainly received from school guidance counsellors and/or school board educational psychologists.

Rehabilitation Team 
 
The Rehabilitation Team follows children who have long term physical disabilities including but not limited to:
  • cerebral palsy
  • spina bifida
  • down syndrome
  • traumatic brain injury
  • spinal cord injury
  • amputation 
 
The team is multidisciplinary and consists of dietitians, registered nurses, occupational therapists, pediatricians, physiotherapists, psychologist, social workers, speech language pathologist and therapeutic recreation workers.
Referrals are accepted from parents, therapists, family doctors, specialists or community health nurses.
 
The Rehabilitation Team provides annual travelling clinics to various regions of the province, thereby decreasing the need for some families to travel to St. John’s for care.
