Music Therapy

Music TherapyMusic therapy is the prescribed, structured, and skillful use of music and musical elements by an accredited music therapist (MTA) to promote, maintain, and restore mental, physical, emotional, spiritual health, and well-being.

Curently there are four music therapists working at Eastern Health in the following areas: 

  • Long Term Care
  • Children’s and Women Health
  • Community Supports Program.

Music therapy benefits people of all ages and musical backgrounds with a variety of special needs including:
  • Brain injuries
  • Developmental disabilities
  • Emotional disturbances
  • Hearing impairments
  • Intellectual disabilities
  • Learning disabilities
  • Physical disabilities
  • Psychiatric illnesses
  • Substance addictions
  • Survivors of abuse
  • Terminal illnesses
  • Visual impairments

Music therapy also provides individualized goals based on the cognitive, social, emotional, behavioral, communicative and physical needs of each client. Sessions can occur in a group, family, or individual setting. Activities include:

  • Singing
  • Instrument playing
  • Composing
  • Improvising
  • Moving to music
