There are a variety of exciting volunteer opportunities that will surely be of interest to you as a volunteer. Positions are available seven days a week, mornings, afternoons and evenings in St. John’s, Rural Avalon and the Peninsulas regions.
Most of Eastern Health’s hospitals and long term care sites have an affiliated auxiliary. Members of the auxiliaries are involved in many different volunteer functions and program delivery, however their main purpose is to fundraise and engage in other revenue generating activities which contribute financial support to care at the affiliated site. Volunteers assist staff by escorting residents and patients to and from their units to the beauty parlor, assisting the beautician with making hair appointments and other duties as requested.
Bliss Murphy Cancer Clinic
Volunteers visit with Cancer Clinic patients and their families to provide companionship and support.
Chronic Disease Self-Management Workshops

Volunteers assist healthcare and support staff in various clinic and office areas with a variety of related duties.
Clinical Area Support
Volunteers assist nursing and other healthcare and support staff with various duties as required in clinically based areas such as nursing units and the emergency department.
Volunteers assist Therapeutic Recreation staff in taking clients on community outings (e.g. movies, shopping, exercise classes).
Eastern Health has six affiliated foundations
. These foundations are dedicated to raising funds to meet the financial needs of their affiliated health care site(s) and program(s).
Volunteers visit with patients and residents to offer companionship, support and or assistance with meals.
Volunteers participate in various fundraising activities (e.g. selling tickets). Revenue generated contributes to the financial support of patient and resident care.
Gift and/or Thrift Shop
Gift shops are located at various sites throughout Eastern Health. The operation of the gift shops relies on the support of volunteers. All proceeds from sales contribute to the financial support of patient and resident care. Volunteers in the gift shop assist customers with purchases and help in the overall operation of the shop during scheduled hours.
Library and/or Gift Carts
Volunteers provide patients and residents with reading material through the library cart or via an opportunity to purchase gift shop items through the gift cart.
Meal Time Assistance
Volunteers assist patients and residents with their meals.
Volunteers provide patients with TVs and DVDs to use during their stay.
Volunteers have the opportunity to share their musical talent by providing entertainment to residents and patients.
Palliative Care volunteers have a unique role in that they interact with patients and families experiencing the death and dying process. Palliative Care volunteers are required to attend a twelve hour orientation session to better prepare them for their volunteer position.
Pastoral Care Services
Volunteers provide patients, residents and their families with spiritual support through visitation, gathering for prayer and worship and supportive care for individual requests.
Volunteers phone patients to remind them of their upcoming appointment.
Therapy Dog Program Therapy Dog Services
offered through St. John Ambulance, enables a volunteer pet-handler and their dog to visit with patients and residents of Eastern Health’s hospitals and long term care sites. Residents and patients of all ages enjoy the physical and emotional connection to the therapy dogs.
Volunteers assist therapeutic recreation staff with various leisure and recreational activities involving patients and residents.
Therapeutic clown volunteers visit with clients to help reduce stress which may be associated with being hospitalized.
