The continued resumption of endoscopy services has remained a priority as we move through the Alert Levels of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador’s plan, Living with COVID-19. Eastern Health reduced services to urgent and emergent due to COVID-19 in March 2020, which resulted in a significant reduction in endoscopy procedures; urgent and emergent endoscopy procedures continued during this time. Endoscopy services began to gradually increase when the province originally moved from Alert Level 5 to Level 4 and have continued to increase in Alert Level 3 and currently in Alert Level 2. 
Endoscopy patients 
Patient lists are being reviewed and triaged on an ongoing basis to complete procedures accordingly. Patients will continue to be prioritized based on urgency, as deemed by their physician. Patients whose health-care needs are identified by their physician as high priority will be contacted about their appointment. 
If you have any questions regarding an appointment that was cancelled, you may contact the endoscopy booking staff using the phone number listed on the appointment letter. If you feel there has been a change in your health status, please contact your physician for an appointment. If you do not have a family doctor or a regular health provider, please call the 811 NL HealthLine (811 / TTY 1-888-709-3555) to speak to a registered nurse 24 hours a day, seven days a week about any health issue or concern. 
Patients who are having aerosol generating medical procedure (AGMP) such as, but not limited to, an upper endoscopy or a bronchoscopy, will require COVID-19 testing. Patients will be contacted up to 72 hours in advance to book their swab testing appointment. 
You will be notified of your appointment by the Endoscopy booking department. If your appointment is less than two weeks from the call, such as an urgent appointment, instructions for preparation of your procedure will be given over the phone. In all other cases, an information package will be sent to you in the mail.  
If you are unable to present for COVID testing at a health-care facility or drive-through clinic, the booking department will help guide you through different options to have the testing completed.

During the month of November, 1,851 endoscopy procedures were completed, maintaining the resumption of normal operations,* plus an additional 12 per cent increase in service volume to address backlogs. This also represents an increase of 62 per cent in service volume from June to November 2020.
