Music & Memory
The brain-music connection

Music & MemoryMusic & Memory is a therapeutic program that brings personalized music into the lives of seniors in nursing homes through the use of iPods.

The Music & Memory program is based on the fact that human brains are hard-wired to connect music with long-term memory. For persons suffering from Alzheimer’s, dementia or other cognitive challenges, music can trigger well-preserved memories enabling the listener to focus on the present moment and to regain a connection to others.

The Music & Memory program is featured in the documentary film Alive inside: A story of music and memory, produced by Michael Rossado Bennett. The 2014 Sundance Film Festival award winning film, available both online and on Netflix, chronicles the experiences of seniors who have been revitalized through music intervention.
