When visiting the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre for the first time, you should bring any medications you are taking including prescription drugs, over the counter medicines, and/or alternative/complementary medicines.

• There are different ways to treat cancer. Your treatment may consist of one or more therapies. Your first visit will allow your doctor to talk to you about your treatment plan. You may need to have more tests done or some extra time may be needed to plan your care. Once a thorough examination and evaluation is done, you and your doctor will agree on the treatment that is best for you.
• Your first visit may take as little as an hour or as long as several hours, depending on whether you need to see more than one doctor, and if blood work, x-ray or other tests are required. 
• The first person you will meet is the receptionist at the main desk. He/She will be pleased to help you on your arrival. If you are not feeling well at this time, please tell the receptionist and he/she will arrange for someone to make you more comfortable. 
• The registration clerk will ask you questions to help complete your chart. Your first scheduled appointment includes time to gather this information. You will need your MCP card. If you are not a resident of Newfoundland and Labrador, your out-of-province health card will be requested. 
• Following registration, you will meet your primary nurse who is experienced in helping people deal with this illness and is there to guide you through this difficult time in your life. He/She will answer your questions and before you leave provide you with a card telling you where and how he/she can be reached.

Complimentary coffee and tea are available in the main clinic waiting area of the Centre. Vending machines are also located within the clinic. If you would like something more substantial, a cafeteria is located in the Health Sciences Centre which is accessible via an internal corridor linking the two facilities.

A supply of wheelchairs is available at the front entrance for patients who visit the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre. We ask that you sign out the chair when you take it and make every effort to return it on your way out.

When you are admitted to hospital, or when you come in for tests or procedures, it is important that you update your personal information with the Admitting Clerk.  If any of the following has charged, please inform the Clerk:

• Next of Kin
• Work Place
• Phone Numbers
• Family Physician
• Religion
• Other Pertinent Information
• Allergic Reactions can be avoided during your stay if the hospital staff is aware of any allergies you have.  If you have any allergies, you must inform your nurse as soon as you are admitted.
