THE AGNES PRATT HOME
This 128 bed long term care facility is located in the west end of St. John’s on Topsail Road. Originally built in 1958 the facility’s capacity has increased from 36 beds to 128 beds with the latest addition occurring in 1988. Presently the Home consists of two 36-bed units and two 28-bed units for a total of 100 single rooms and 14 double rooms – all with their own private bathrooms.HistoryThe Agnes Pratt Home is operated under the auspices of the United Church of Canada and is one of (six) (6) homes that provide care for the elderly in St. John’s. It was one of the pioneers in the Province in recognizing the need for special services for this group of people. The Home was officially opened on September 7, 1958 with a total of 36 beds. In 1972 the first extension of 32 beds was added to the Home, this included a 16-bed Nursing Unit bringing the bed total to 68. A second extension in 1988 increased the number of resident beds to 136 and provided areas for additional programming and services, which would be needed for residents requiring a much higher level of care. Presently the Home consists of two 36-bed and two 28-bed units for a total of 100 single rooms and 14 double rooms. The Home has 128 beds, 28 of which are on the Protective Care Unit, a special unit for people with dementia at risk for elopement. There are currently two beds available for Respite services, including one bed on Protective Care.PhilosophyOur philosophy for providing care is resident centered. We believe this approach ensures supportive care that considers every resident’s individual needs. In providing care we make every effort to recognize strengths and build on them. This approach also requires that professional staff work collaboratively as a team in making decisions regarding care that is appropriate.
We offer high level care (Level III & IV); have a Protective Care Unit as well as Respite Service. We consider ourselves an extension of the community and work to assist individuals through programs such as Meals on Wheels.AdmissionsAdmission to The Agnes Pratt Home is based on the need and circumstances of the applicant, the type of care required, the environment most appropriate for the applicant, and the accommodation available.
