Located in the east end of St. John's, St. Patrick's Mercy Home's has a long history of quality care and compassion. It is a long term care facility that homes 214 beds. The nursing home is committed to caring for the whole person, respecting the sacredness of life and the dignity of each individual. Mercy is a way of life at St. Patrick’s Mercy Home, which is intrinsic to our operation and enacted by our Staff and Volunteers.

History

• Construction of a “Senior’s Home” began in 1956 as a result of community need. 
• Situated on land donated by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of St. John’s.
• A “Cent-A-Meal” Campaign was begun by the Community, and therefore a sense of ownership by the Community and residents who reside here. 
• Existing Building opened in 1958 with 82 beds. 
• Operation and Ownership of building and land transferred from the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of St. John’s to the Sisters of Mercy in 1958. 
• Extension constructed and opened in 1985 with an additional 132 beds to a total now of 214 beds. 
• Office Space provided for 12 Staff from the St. John’s Nursing Home Board in 2000. 
• Institutional Laundry Services expanded to service Homes within the St. John’s Nursing Home Board in 2002.

Admission
All applications for admission are processed through a Single Entry System, coordinated by Health and Community Services, St. John's region.

An assessor from Health and Community Services will then visit the person requesting admission to a nursing home and complete an assessment for placement. Nursing home placement assessments for people who are currently hospitalized are completed by the Social Worker in the hospital. Upon medical discharge, these applicants may be referred to a transition bed at the Hoyles-Escasoni Complex transition unit or The Leonard Miller Centre, to await placement. This transfer referral happens if the applicant is not admitted to a nursing home directly from hospital.

Applicants can request three nursing homes of choice for placement.

All applications are processed through an Assessment and Placement Committee where acute care, community and nursing homes are represented. The applicant's level of care is determined and the applicant's name is appropriately placed on the waiting list.

When a vacancy occurs in a nursing home, a social worker on site contacts a Placement Coordinator at Health and Community Services. Applications are then forwarded to that nursing home, where an interdisciplinary review is completed. The social worker then contacts the appropriate applicant or family to offer placement.
