The Hoyles-Escasoni Complex has a total of 377 long term care beds with respite. In the east end of St. John's, the Complex is the largest nursing home facility in the region. It also contains a new 15-bed Transition Unit where patients released from acute care hospitals may stay, prior to moving into a long term care facility. The Complex also has an Achievement Centre for various creative activities, and a Protective Care unit.

• Is treated with dignity and in a manner that is courteous, fair and considerate, regardless of his/her color, creed, cultural background, religion, financial or medical status;
• Is provided with quality care and assisted to achieve and maintain an optimal level of independence;
• Has access to programs that reflect individual physical, spiritual, social, emotional and recreational needs;
• Becomes involved in treatment programs and is kept informed of their purpose;
• Has his/her condition, care and treatment explained in easily understood terms to him/herself, or to next-of-kin, or a designated third party;
• Is kept informed about rules and regulations governing the Complex, services provided and how to access these services;
• Has access to the provincial legislation, regulations and policies that impact upon the facility's operation;
• May manage his/her own financial affairs, unless unable to do so;
• May appoint the Complex, next-of-kin or an authorized person as administrator of his/her financial affairs and knows that if the facility is appointed it will provide detailed information regarding any and all financial transactions to him/herself, next of kin or authorized person;
• Can choose his/her personal physician, providing the physician adheres to the by-laws of the Complex and the physician agrees to follow guidelines developed by the Medical Advisory Committee;
• Has freedom from chemical or physical restraints, except as authorized in writing by a physician for a specified period of time, or when necessary to protect him/herself from injury to self or others;
• Has privacy when receiving counseling, treatment, or personal care, and access to a quiet area to communicate with family, lawyers, clergy, or friends;
• Is assured that his/her records will be kept confidential and made available only to authorized persons requiring such information;
• Can view the Complex as being his/her home and is able to personalize assigned rooms with favorite pictures, photographs or chair, so long as space limitations, safety requirements and other resident's rights are recognized;
• Is assured that he/she will not be transferred to another facility without prior knowledge, consent and involvement in the planning process, unless such a move takes place during a life-threatening situation;
• Has the internal or external research, surveys and polls adequately explained, and can refuse or grant participation and has access to results of such participation;
• Is provided with opportunities to develop his/her interests, abilities and potential;
• Can form friendships and enjoy normal relationships with persons of his/her choice without hindrance of embarrassment to him/herself;
• Is encouraged to establish and participate in resident organizations. Support will be provided by staff and administration;
• Can express feelings, criticisms and grievances to staff members or administration without fear of reprisal of residents;
• Can expect to have adequate and nutritional meals and snacks appropriate to the special needs of residents;
• May refuse medical treatment and medications and is informed of the medical consequences of his/her refusal. This, to the extent that it will not interfere with the lives and safety of other residents (e.g. in the case of communicable diseases) or violate any specific laws. In all such cases, the home has the right to expect the resident to give a written waiver of legal actions, including malpractice;
• Is assured that all staff have been made aware of, and will honor, the foregoing.

Admission

All applications for admission are processed through a Single Entry System, coordinated by Health and Community Services, St. John's region.

An assessor from Health and Community Services will then visit the person requesting admission to a nursing home and complete an assessment for placement. Nursing home placement assessments for people who are currently hospitalized are completed by the Social Worker in the hospital. Upon medical discharge, these applicants may be referred to a transition bed at the Hoyles-Escasoni Complex transition unit or The Leonard Miller Centre, to await placement. This transfer referral happens if the applicant is not admitted to a nursing home directly from hospital.

Applicants can request three nursing homes of choice for placement.

All applications are processed through an Assessment and Placement Committee where acute care, community and nursing homes are represented. The applicant's level of care is determined and the applicant's name is appropriately placed on the waiting list.

When a vacancy occurs in a nursing home, a social worker on site contacts a Placement Coordinator at Health and Community Services. Applications are then forwarded to that nursing home, where an interdisciplinary review is completed. The social worker then contacts the appropriate applicant or family to offer placement.
