Golden Heights Manor and the Protective Care Unit at the Bonavista Peninsula Health Centre are accredited long term care facilities that serve the residents of the Bonavista Peninsula.  Golden Heights Manor has a total of 64 beds and admitted their first resident on September 14, 1977. The Protective Care Unit has 12 beds and admitted their first resident on September 21, 1992. The Unit is a protected environment to provide care to persons at risk for wandering.

Philosophy 

Staff at Golden Heights Manor and the Protective Care Unit knows that each resident is unique with different wants and needs. In keeping with this belief we are committed to ensuring that each resident has the right:  

• To be treated with courtesy and respect in a way that fully recognizes the resident’s dignity and individuality.
• To be free from mental, physical, emotional, verbal, and sexual abuse. 
• To live in a safe, clean, and healthy environment.
• To be given access to appropriate areas outside the facility in order to enjoy outdoor activities.
• To form friendships and to enjoy relationships.
• To pursue social, cultural, religious, leisure, and other interests to promote personal growth and physical well-being. 
• To receive rehabilitation and assistance towards independence consistent with identified requirements. 
• To be informed as to who is responsible for, and who is providing, his/her direct care.
• To be afforded privacy in treatment and in caring for personal needs.
• (Family) To be informed of his/her medical condition and to exercise informed consent regarding treatment and proposed courses of treatment.
• (Family) To have access to his/her medical and personal records and to have them kept confidential in accordance with the law.
• To vote in all municipal, provincial and federal elections and to have arrangements made to accommodate this right.

Admission 

Admission to Golden Heights Manor and the Protective Care Unit is based on need. The Health and Community Services representative sends completed assessments to the Regional Assessment and Placement Committee for review and selection of type of placement required.
