GENERAL HOSPITAL (HEALTH SCIENCES CENTRE)

The General Hospital is part of the Health Sciences Centre complex, which also includes the Janeway and the Dr. H Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre.

The Health Sciences Centre is a tertiary acute care facility serving the people of the entire province. It is a teaching hospital and is connected to Memorial University’s Schools of Medicine, Pharmacy and Nursing. It is also connected and shares services with the Janeway Children’s Health and Rehabilitation Centre and the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre. The Women’s Heath Clinic is also located in the General Hospital.

Admission
The Admitting Department is located in the main hospital corridor just inside the main entrance. Please proceed to admissions before going to your care area unless otherwise notified.

Room Accomodation
There are two types of accommodations offered to patients:

Wards – 4 beds per room
Private Room – 1 bed per room

Patients who request a private room must make a deposit. This can be paid by cash, cheques or credit card. Unless the deposit is received, you will not be considered as having requested a private room.

Private - $100 per day
Deposit - $200 (with proof of insurance) $300 (without insurance)

Please note: If you receive a private room, you will be required to move if a sicker patient is in need of a private room and no other one is available. You will not be charged for the room once you move out and we will try to get you back in a private room as soon as one is available.

Meals
For your first day or two in hospital, you will receive food choices from a standard menu. After that you will receive menus to select your meals.

Mealtimes are as follows:

Breakfast – 7:45am to 8:30am
Lunch – 11:45am to 12:30pm
Supper – 4:45pm to 5:30pm

If you have problems or concerns about your meals, please let your nurse know or ask to see a Food Services supervisor or your dietician.
