Influenza: What You Need to Know

Influenza, also known as the "flu", is a common and highly contagious, respiratory disease. It is caused by a virus and is easily caught and spread.

Symptoms of the flu typically include:

Headache
Chills
Rapid onset of cough, fever, body aches and pains

While most people recover fully from the flu, it may lead to more severe and life-threatening complications such as pneumonia.

How can I prevent the spread?

Wash your hands. Frequent hand washing can reduce the risk of all respiratory infections
Cover your cough. You can also reduce the spread of germs by practising safe coughing and sneezing techniques
Stay at home. Anybody who thinks they have an influenza-like illness (i.e. fever and cough) should remain at home and limit exposure to others

Looking for a flu shot?

Flu shots will be available starting October 29, 2012. Seasonal influenza vaccinations are available by appointment primarily through family physicians’ offices; but are also available by appointment through your local Community Health office.
